Dad are you sure LooLoo (our sick yellow lab) will get better?
In that instance I felt weakness surge through my body.. I know what she was looking for …she was waiting for that unwavering assurance that things will always be OK… Fathers are suppose be superheroes in difficult situations like this … but I felt powerless and uncertain how to give her what she needed.
Dogs become like family members… Our LooLoo is 10 years old and has woven herself into the fabric of our clan. I don’t think Izzy knows life without her nor has she every thought it a possibility. LooLoo got sick over the weekend while staying with our dog sitter. We haven’t slept much since she first became ill and it looks like we won’t be for the next few days until she gets better.
When she asked me if I was sure she would get better, I responded with the only thing I could muster at the time… “Honey, I can’t promise she will get better but…. we all will do everything we can to ensure that she does”.
OK she said… then drifted off towards thoughts of her dog far beyond me.
(Happy update: she is doing much better now that the antibiotics and cough meds have kicked into high gear)
I believe every parent is blessed with superpowers. How else can anyone explain a woman who can birth a person? People makers …I dare anyone to doubt that is not a super-superpower. Dad’s can’t do it and I don’t know any personally brave enough to even try…. But Dad’s have other superpowers…not on the level of Mom’s but impressive anyway….
Super Eyesight – The ability to find lost keys, handbags, gloves, hats, driving directions and lost toys….
Superhuman Strength: Can carry a diaper bag, a screaming toddler, multiple groceries bags, a handful of toys, and still have an arm free to open the car door.
Super Body Twitching / Mind Reading: Can tell when his wife is really mad even though she says 10 times ….I’m fine! Dad’s can also tell when their kids need to pee/poop even when the kid doesn’t know yet.
Super Bait and Switch Skills: The ability to divert and refocus a child’s attention when they have taken another kids favorite toy and that kids is about to explode into a major meltdown.
McGuyver Fixit / Buildit Skills: “Dad, my [fill in the blank] is broken……Can you fix it!” This is when that roll of duct tape, Gorilla glue, and coat hangers spring into action to mend and rebuild anything. A dad’s fixit / build it superpower is especially helpful during late night diorama day … Yes! This is where Dad’s show their stuff helping the kids make shoebox models into three-dimensional wonderlands
My superpower is baby whispering. I was gifted the superpower to calm crying infants. I suppose one could say that after caring for five daughters this superpower is more like a learned skill. But, however I got it…through experience or as a gift from the God’s I have it… I use this when the grandkids come to visit…. and it keeps me in practice..and gives their parents peace… Not sure if it works with grown up kids…. and I hope I don’t have to try for many more years…
For now I’d exchange my superpower for a healthy wagging tail and a big lick in the face…. Oh I forgot to mention… LooLoo’s superpower is reading my blog… She says it always makes her feel better…but my grammar needs some work…

Hope LooLoo pulls through!
