Richards Drive-in old school social distancing

Richards Drive-In Memorial Drive Cambridge Ma

If you grew up in Cambridge during the 50’s and 60’s, there were a number of Adventure Car Hop Drive-in restaurants featuring car hop / curb service. Cambridge had its own Car Hop called Richards Drive-in on Memorial Drive next to the Art Deco styled BB Chemical building (which later became a Polaroid building).

Richards Drive-in along with the Adventure Car Hop on Route 1 in Saugus became famous in part by advertising on a radio show hosted by legendary DJ Arnie the “Woo Woo” Ginsburg. They named a burger after him called the Ginsburger which he used to pitch during his ad.

That’s right; the Ginsburger is now being served at Adventure Car Hops.  I designed it, I planned it, I tested it, but you’re going to eat it.  And what a delicious mouthful it is.  And adventure Car Hops is serving the Ginsburger on a record which you get to keep for your very own.  If you say Woo-Woo Ginsberg with your order, you get another Ginsburger free of charge.

OLD SCHOOL SOCIAL DISTANCING
In many ways this car side service was the predecessor to what we now are experiencing with curb side social distancing take out delivery. Sitting in my car waiting for my curb side take-out order the other day …I remembered the days when a Richards Drive-in Twin Burger was $.55 and a Vanilla Frappe so thick that you could set a fence post with it was $.35.

If I was going to the electric chair that would be my wish for my last dying meal.

I’d collect coke bottles for months just to pony up to the take out window (we didn’t own a car) with my dollar and order… Twin Burger and a Vanilla Western Frappe please!

That will be $.95 for your order sir..

Thank you mam and keep the change…

I was a big spender in those days…

Thanks Don for the memories. Spent many a night hanging around at Richards until the Mets threw us out. We used to go next door to the Stop and Shop parking lot. Adventure drive in was up on route 1 in Saugus. They were the joint that offered the Ginsburger. Thanks again for all the posts. I remember your mom Mary as I was a friend of Johns ( Harpo ).

    1. Thanks Nicky, Ya I miss Johnny … he always gave me a job that put money in my pocket and took care of me growing up..the nearest thing to a Dad I remember. Your memory is better than mine and you are right about the Adventure Drive-In on Route 1 in Saugus now that I remember. I updated the post.. Thanks for keeping me honest.. Donnie

  2. I worked at Howdy Beef Burgers during high school “Howdy, this is Curt Gowdy coming to you from Fenway Park.” always got a chuckle from me. I wondered if he ever ate there without getting paid to do it.
