The God of Driving

Nobody slept in our house last night… we all lay awake in anxious anticipation for my daughter’s state driving test at 8:00 AM the next morning.  It was kind of like waiting for on a six month deliberation with the verdict that could change our lives forever..…To pass or not to pass that was the question….

As she drove off to be tested on parallel parking, three-point turning, adherence to posted traffic signals and signs…. I felt a pain of desperation…. I found myself in a one on one with the great driving God Helios…. Asking that he grant her the skills and knowledge to be a great driver if only just for the day….

For those unfamiliar with ancient mythology, the myth of the driving God Helios was that the Sun was put in his chariot and driven everyday all along the sky so the Sun would rise and set.

I knew by speaking to Helios he would understand the importance of a good licensed driver especially since his son Phaethon often secretly took his chariot for a joy rides without a license… Well he granted my request and she passed her test..

To follow up on her education as a newly registered driver in the State of Massachusetts I began to cover the possible scenarios which she might encounter as a solo driver..  I walked up to the drivers window speaking in the official traffic stop tone and said the following:

Officer Dad:  Good day … Do you know why I stopped you?

Izzy: No…smile.  Why?

Officer Dad: I stopped you because you mowed down a pedestrian walking with a red tipped cane and continued to drive away….

Izzy: Oh..  sorry

Officer Dad: Can you please pass me your license and registration

Izzy:  OK it is in the glove compartment…. Here you go..

Officer Dad:  Lady.. this is a Speedy Lube inspection report…   Try again..  Nope this is the State Inspection report

Izzy:  How about this one?

Officer Dad:  Nope ….that’s the owners Manual

Izzy:  Oh here it is… it says Vehicle Registration

Officer Dad: God in Heaven ….please help me…

Helios:  These mortals never learn to be careful what they wish for…..

PS: To be honest I must admit she is a very good driver… Thank God

I'd love to hear your thoughts...drop me a line
